The Executive Secretary Christina Yiannapi and the Program and Policy Officer Andreas Kyprianides of the Cyprus Youth Council attended the Legal Committee of the House of Representatives to continue the discussion regarding the bill for the creation of the institution of the Citizens’ Initiative.
In the context of the debate, we were invited to take a position on the bill, contributing constructively to the process.
This institution exists, both in the European Union and in many American states, promoting a positive policy, which our country needs. At European level, the European Citizens’ Initiative enables all citizens to actively participate in EU policy-making.
The creation of the institution will provide the Citizens of the Republic of Cyprus with the opportunity to call on the Government to take action or modify existing policy/legislation, in areas of their interest and at the same time regulates the obligation of the Government to consider the requests if they are supported by a sufficient number of citizens .
As the Cyprus Youth Council, we are following the process with keen interest and support the effort that has begun.
Our goal is to ensure the participation of young people in it as well as to ensure the accessibility and inclusion of all citizens.
